It ain't all about meme...

Along with attracting the instant attention and potential enmity of angry nutcases from all around the globe and possibly having your good writing cut-and-pasted into someone else's website by a lazy plagiarist (the globe's full of them), blogging carries with it another unique occupational hazard... being "tagged" as part of a viral "meme." I was so-collared this week and invited to join in on the fun... and that makes you my +1. (more...)

A Mother's Face...

With Mother's Day fast approaching, I was thinking about Movie Mothers. There are obviously thousands of them, and each one of us has our own favorites from out of the many films we've all seen, but these are just a few of mine. (more...)

It Always Rains on Sunday...

“…another tale of doomed lovers and petty criminals adrift on rain swept streets. But the director is also alert to the gossiping and backbiting of the Bethnal Green neighbourhood.” - The Independent (London) (more...)

The Discreet Charm of Charlie Ruggles...
Posted by: moirafinnie6

Sure, Depression era audiences had it tough. Long lines to get a job (if there was one to be had), soup lines to cadge some food, and even long queues at the movies, but at least when they got inside the theatre for a whopping 25¢ they were often in the assured hands of a professional for six decades: Charlie Ruggles. Cranking out a remarkable 51 features in the decade, (some good, some bad, but several simply splendid), it was Mr. Ruggles' most productive cinematic period. Perhaps to him it was all just part of the job. (more...)

Dance of the Vampires...

As my contribution to Marilyn Ferdinand's Invitation to the Dance Movie Blog-a-Thon going on all week over at Ferdy on Film, I remind all interested parties that Roman Polanski's Gothic lampoon The Fearless Vampire Killers (or Pardon Me, but Your Teeth are in My Neck, 1966) was originally called Dance of the Vampires. Celebrating Great Old Movie Houses...

Is anybody else fascinated by photos of old movie theaters, especially the outside, when you can read the marquees? I love to see what movies are playing, and especially to see photos where there are people waiting outside. Whereas I couldn’t think of anything worse today than being in a crowded theater with a loud coughing, crackling, chatting, texting, or beeping audience, back in the day, as they say, it was the only way to go. DYLAN AT NEWPORT 1965 – The Rashomon Moment...
Posted by: Jeff
|
The legend that still clings to Dylan’s performance at the 1965 Newport festival is that he was booed off the stage for his electric set, only to return to the stage alone, properly chastised, to finish with a short acoustic set. Murray Lerner’s The Other Side of the Mirror: Bob Dylan Live at the Newport Folk Festival, 1963-1965 (2007) proves otherwise and is the perfect antidote to Todd Hayes' I'm Not There (2007). (more...)

"Kluger's out!"...

Quintessential noir tough guy Charles McGraw plays one of his most merciless roles in RKO's The Threat (1949), as condemned killer Arnold "Red" Kluger, who busts out of Folsom in a hale of Tommy gun fire with a mind to settle a score with John Law and the woman who done him wrong.

Appreciating Director Henry Koster...
Posted by: Medusa

Let’s take this May 1st opportunity to remember one of Hollywood’s unfairly unsung directors, the German émigré Henry Koster. Between his thirty year Hollywood career and his beginnings in Europe before that, he directed almost fifty films, many of them genuine classics, and yet he’s somehow escaped the lionization that so many other classic-era Hollywood directors attained. A solid directorial talent with an eye for luscious detail, Koster switched between studios and genres to amass a list of credits that would do anyone proud. (more...)
